Hi,
I have a 10 HP 1955 Johnson that I have the gears exposed down in the skeg. I can't get to the shift rod unless I take the gears out, can someone tell me the safe way to do this so I can get access to the shift rod under the gears?

That's a pretty small picture.

You've done the hard part. Opened up the LU. The rest is easy. But why do you want access to the shift rod?

Anyway, all you have to do it lift the prop shaft and and gears out. It just sits there. You have removed what holds it in (the skeg). when you put it back in you will see a tab on the opposite end from the prop that the bearing has to fit into. That's it. It's quite easy.

Thanks. I have to change the lower shift rod because whoever had it in the past ground down the top knob that catches the bolt where it connects to the top shift rod.

AArrgh. You''re kidding! I've never seen that on any engine. Sigh. Oh well. It's easy. Once the prop shaft is out it pulls right out. If you haven't done it, now's a good time to reseal the lower unit as you have done all the work. All you need is a seal kit for $25 or so and put it all back together.
