Lower unit compatibility

I have 2 lower units one is off a 77 85hp. and the other from a 78 85hp. I've dry fitted the 78 to my 77 and everything looks like it would bolt up perfect. Was wondering if the ratios are the same or different? And are they interchangeable?

These 2 units shift different.------The 78 shifts to forward with an UP motion of the shift rod.----Model numbers of the 2 motors?----Do the shift rods look identical?

I'm running the the 77 on my boat currently. I had a 78 but water got in it and it seized. Made a flywheel puller with a 6' handle and it wouldn't break free so parts motor. Both feet are good and was wondering if I should hold on to the 78 foot or try and find it a new home?

Have to wait until daylight to check shift rod and model off the 78 the 77 is a 85EL77S
