Hi, I was working on my 1975 merc 115 when I noticed a small crack on the lower gearing unit, it's right beside the water intake (about an inch away). This boat has been professionally stored away for the past three years so I can't understand why the crack appeared but my question is this...is there any an apoxy or other product I can use on this crack to seal it?
On a hot day sitting in my driveway I get about three to four drops on the pavement and there's no sign on water in the unit...as of right now it looks more like a sweat but never the less it's a leak...
I inherited the boat a few months back and have been trying to contact the marine repair dealer to get a back log on repairs and what not but they havn't bothered to return my calls.
Any help would be appreciated
Falker

Re: Lower unit crack

Falker, If you are dripping oil out of that lower foot, it will have to be fixed. My first question would be, "Is it in a high stress area?". If it is not, I would see if someone could weld it. If it is in a stress area, I would look on Ebay and find a lower foot used, or just find a housing and swap everything over(could be costly at a dealer). If there is no water in the lower unit, I would bet that someone damaged it in storage. If you run it, it will soon be a chocolate milk shake. :(
