Are these my drain plug gaskets? does that big fat washer go on the screw ? or is it the gray plastic ring?

Some outboards use "O" rings instead of gaskets under the Vent and Drain/Fill PLUGS. Looks like that is what you have.

the white nylon washers are the right ones I think. The o-rings looks like the shift rod o-ring and the pivot pin o-ring.

If the drain plug has a flat surface on it you use the white nylon gasket. If it has a gruve for an oring you must use an oring. Don't use the white nylon one on the plug that has the gruve for the oring.

Just curious. In that picture of the plug with the post (magnet?), the head on the thread side looks like it has a recess and is filled with something dark. Could that be an old and compressed O-ring.

What motor do you have?

Looks like you can type faster than I can.

Re: lower unit drain plug gasket??

that magnet plug had an oring recessed inside of it. that was the old plug. the new kit came with a tiny o ring that fit in the new drain plug. but it only came with one little o ring and a nylon washer I assumed was for the other plug. does it need to have the oring and the nylon gasket? I put the oring plug in the top and the nylon one at the bottom. it looks to me like it had a recess in it same as the top plug for an o ring it has been installed now for a few hours and it doesn't seem to be leaking?

both drain plugs I pulled out had magnets on them the ones from the kit only had one magnet. should I have put the magnet one on the bottom or does it matter as long as they aren't leaking? thanks again

Re: lower unit drain plug gasket??

If you are only using one plug with a magnet it should go in the bottom. If you have 2 rubber O-rings and if both your old plugs have recesses, why don't you use your old plugs. Normally there's so much lube leaking during installation of the plugs that it's not a problem but make sure there is lube on the O-rings so they won't bind and tear.

It's not clear. How many new plugs and nylon gaskets did you get?

two new plugs.....one with a magnet one without. one tiny o-ring that fit into the magnet plug. One nylon gasket that I put on the short plug. (in the pic above) The short plug looked like it had a spot in it for the tiny o ring but I only got one in the kit. The reason why I put the new plugs in is the boat sat for a long time and I don't trust em. Should the short plug have a o ring?

If any plug has a recess in them you use O-rings; the flat plastic washers won't work on any plug with a recess. You can get O-rings from any BRP dealer or just go to Lowes and get them. Good luck

Possibly a mistake in the way it was packed; it happens.

Re: lower unit drain plug gasket??

The kits come with both the O-Ring and plastic washer. I think they do it to minimize on the number of parts. Mine, '04 115HP, used the plastic washers.

Another example, I bought a lower unit seal kit for mine last year. It had all the parts for V4 and V6 motors. I had lots of parts left over etc. The kit was $90 and I didn't use half of it. Would have liked to pay only $50 and just get the parts I needed.

Re: lower unit drain plug gasket??

riptide did you have one magnet and one normal drain plug? I had one o-ring and one nylon washer. One magnet and one normal plugs I ended up putting the magnet on the bottom and the nylon with the short plug on the top.

Sorry for making this more than it is I know drain plugs are not a big deal but when you don't know you don't know. It doesn't drip any oil so I am satisfied for now. my oil seems to get a little milky and I was hoping it was just the drain plugs but I think I am going to do the whole kit. might use the engine and drain the LU oil a few times before I actually do the seal kit but I'll get to it. Any issues with changing the LU oil often to prolong the LU seal kit change?

Re: lower unit drain plug gasket??

This topic prompted me to take a closer look at my 1957 3hp Lightwin 3022. The plugs are grooved for o-rings. My local Evinrude dealer said the o-ring plugs are not a good design as the shoulder of the plug can keep the o-ring from being fully compressed if the o-ring is worn or deteriorated. I bought 2 modern plugs with nylon washers. Hopefully, this explains why I had some milky LU lube as the o-rings were very flat. If not, I will need to replace the seals.

Re: lower unit drain plug gasket??

Both of the plugs were of the magnet variety. Both of the plugs in the motor when I bought it were of the magnet variety but I bought the motor used so who knows what was in it when it was new. Also when I bought it the bottom plug had the plastic washer and the top plug did not have anything. I used 2 magnet plugs with the washers.
