I have just purchased a boat that has been sitting for 4 years. The story is he hit a stump while traveling on plane, the boat continued to the ramp making a clicking sound from lower unit, then when he put it in neutral at the dock it would not pull either way. I read several posts here and decided to pull the lower unit. What i found was the collar for the shifter had slipped down so the shift rod was not turning the gear selector. It was stuck in neutral. My question is what keeps this collar from slipping back down. I also decided to drain the lube and found there was none in there, maybe he did this to winterize. So i ran about a quart of gear lube through it and got a few shavings out. I am going to put an impeller in it while it is down and am considering taking it in for seals and pressure / vacuum test. Sound right? What is a clutch dog, expensive? My other problem involves the trim motor. It seems to be stuck, I have tested at the selonoids and found them to be deliviering voltage but the clicking is all i hear. The motor is completely silent. What is involved and what are the probibiltys off taking the motor (square one) off the pump and trying to free it up. I was told and i am inclined to believe that it was working when boat was parked. All this is on an 86 Mariner 150 V6. I do intend to get a manual but it is a free weekend for me and i am itching to do the shake down cruise. I have cleaned the carbs allready.

no oil? not good... start with pressure test
of l/u and go from there. see any cracks?
clutch dog is v.small cam that shifts gears.
not expensive at all.

there are no cracks, but there is a very small lump near the pinon on the left side standing behind the boat.

Re: Lower unit engagment and trim question.

update: i have found my shift problem I think, I just want to run it by the pros to see what they think. The end of my shift shaft snapped of. From the descripion i was given (see above) I am thinking the shaft broke almost in half on
impact, (the running while clicking), then
snapped on off at the ramp, (stuck in neutral). Since this is a low stress shaft think it can be welded? It broke about 1 1/4 inch from bottom, the splined collar. My main deliama now is that darn trim motor. Does the motor have to come off the transom to get it off? It is the square one with 2 diagional bolts. I believe it would run if i could just break it lose.

That pump might be mounted to a bracket with just two bolts I think. If it is, it's real easy to remove.

c/6
Hooty

update: I, after reading a few hundred more posts
decided to try and tackle the trim motor today,
was easier than i thought. Slid the right motor bracket over and there you go. Was able to break
the motor lose and reinstall it in less than an hour. I did use an impact wrench.
Bad news on the lower unit though. I found the
shift shaft i needed at the used boat part place
and while i was there he said he would look over my gear case and put in a new impeller. It hit a snag when spinning in the impeller, they took it apart while i watched and sure enough the pinion was missing a tooth and one of the drive gears was gone to. My case appears all right, so I am in the market for a good used gear set. 11 spline 14x28.

Update; you are hearing from a proud person tonite, I just got done putting the tools away after rebuilding my own lower unit. I lucked into a brand new set of gears for 72 usd, went to the bearing house and cross refrenced the bearings $65 for the four I needed, 1 tapered roller, 1 ball, and 2 needle, 36 usd bought every seal and water pump gaskets, $17 for a new impeller and $4 for gear lube. In addition i payed 40usd to get the carrier taken out and the spline nut tightened afterwards. Grand total $234 usd, and every thing except the shafts, housing and a couple of bearings (that were in perfect condition) is brand new. About $800 less than I was quoted for a rebuilt unit. It pays well to shop around and do it yourself. Took me a 1/2 day to do the work and a few hours to gather parts. Was not that hard to do either.

Re: Lower unit engagment and trim question.

I finally got to do a water test today. Other than the panic from no tale tell (mud wasps) it went well. Any adivce on break in procedure for new gears and bearings? What I have done so far is idled in gear for about the first 20 minutes did the FAQ decarb at the same time. Then went out to the main river and put her on plane quckly then backed off to about 3500 rpm. Ran a couple of miles varing the throttle between 3500 and 6000 mainly around 4000. The unit may have an hour on it so far. What next? I was thinking I would put maybe one more hour on it, maybe cruise around in reverse a little bit then change the oil.
