I Have a 1976 Johnson 85hp V4 with a fair amount of danage on the skeg and cavitaion plate. It would more than likly run ok but looks unsightly.

I found a used grear case on eBay but the listing says its off an early 80's model 90hp V4. I contacted the person selling it to get a P/N so I could do some cross reference to see if will fit my old 76. The seller can't locate the P/N.

Anyone know if these are interchangable or where the part number might be located on the gearcase?

i believe you need a 73-76 lower unit, the shift linkage change in 77-78.

The one I am looking at on eBay is a bare case with no internals. I am needing to know if the case is the same. I could then transfer all my internals over to the other case.

Sounds like a lot of work and expense, cant your existing one be welded?

Cases are different - different shifting method and associated bits... bottom line, you need a housing or complete unit as TD noted.
