Lower Unit Fitment

Hello,

I am trying to fit a Johnson 1996 130 HP gearcase to a Johnson 1990 115 HP. I understand the 96 has a two piece drive shaft and the 90 had a one piece. I do not have the gearcase off of the 90 model to compare. Can anyone tell me if they will interchange, or what I can do to make the 96 model work?

Thanks for any advise!!!!

Re: Lower Unit Fitment

The 130 had a V-6 style gear case and may have a different gear ratio.

boobie,

Thanks for the reply. I could live with a different ratio, but do you think the driveshaft lengths and splines would be similar to allow it to bolt up as is?

Re: Lower Unit Fitment

There were some changes made in length of splines / depth of splines in crankshaft.----Tried to fit a gearcase one time and the starter would not crank properly when bolts were tightened.---Loosened the bolts and it cranked OK.-----Get all the facts / measurements to compare before handing over the coin.----Shift rod is likely different too.
