Hi all,

I have a seemingly great running '60 super seahorse 40 HP that has a trashed clutch dog cradle (I think that's what it's called) and bearings. Anyway, too much is wrong to try to buy parts and fix it.

What are the chances of finding a reasonably priced lower unit for this motor? I've never had a problem with the powerhead itself, so I'd like to keep it if I can replace the lower unit for a reasonable price. Or, are gear assemblies available so I could potentially rebuild it?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Watch the auction site and post a wanted ad on the free classifieds at www.aomci.org
Shouldn't be too hard to find, or too pricey.

Thanks for the info. By the way, is there some trick to taking these lower units off? I removed the six lower bolts and loosened the shift linkage coupler, but it doesn't seem to want to budge. I took out the lower mount screws/bolts too, but those don't seem to hold the lower unit in. Seems to be stuck at some point.

There is a large vertical bolt at the back of the motor that goes through from the top. You have to remove the rear exhaust housing cover to get to that bolt. There are a bunch of Phillips head screws which must be taken out to remove that cover.
