lower unit gaskets

I am very new to the site and was wondering, I have a mid 90's 40hp evinrude outboard every fall I drain my lower unit and add new when I drain the gear oil its milkey so Im assuming that I need a seal kit or ? how many places can water get into there I have a hunch that its right behind the prop. would I need any special puller to get that bearing assembly off. I tryed to get ot off last year but had no success and i just dont want to run another year with water in the gear oil thank you

If you take the gearcase off and have a service department run pressure and vacuum tests while you have the oil out, they can tell you exactly where the leak is and what you will need to fix it.

To do the tests properly you need both tests. A MityVac 04050 is a good tool for the job.

The leaks can be at the propshaft, the driveshaft, the shift rod, or the drain/fill plugs. All of the replacement seals come in a gearcase seal kit, including new vent and fill plugs.

thats a good idea on this type of lower unit is there specialized tools and or anything that i would need to shim/toleranced ect. this will be my first plunge in a lower unit if there are any links/posts on this exact type of procedure that will help. what I really like to do is just get a kit and put it in but it doesnt seem that easy

well the snow melted enough to get to the boat and I am read to take the lower unit off how does the drive shaft and shift rod come off its a 1997 40hp and will i be able to get it apart and together with standard tools?
