I have an 89 Seadrive 140 Outboard, is it OK to put any 80w-90 Marine gear lube in the lower unit?

I bought some Quicksilver at Walmart, but I am a little concerned with the label that says (didn't notice it til I was putting it in).

"For use in all outboard lower units and jet pumps below 75hp."

I am not sure if they mean it is OK for all outboard lower units, but only jet pumps if they are below 75hp, or do they mean OK for outboard units lower than 75hp and jet pumps lower than 75hp?

Here is a link to the product, the sentence in question is on the front under SAE 80W-90.

I don't know what is specifically recommended for your drive, but I can tell you that Mercury recommends their SAE 90 high performance gear lube for anything 75hP+

Merc makes two basic types of gear oils, the "Premium" and the "High Performance" oils. Available in both the Mercury and Quicksilver brands. The Hi Perf is a better oil, and what I'd be putting in that 140 gearcase.

BRP (Evinrude) actually makes three gearcase lubes. As engines became more powerful, loads on the gears became heavier, and they developed lubes to handle it. Other lubes will probably work but you can also take the guesswork out of it and use what the builder designed. Evinrude Hi-Vis, or HPF Pro. Get some between your fingers and the difference over ordinary 80-90 oil is obvious. Not downplaying Merc oil, I just don't have much experience with it.

The HPF Bombardier is great oil. Probably very similar to the Merc Hi Perf oil. Both are considered a "top of the line" oil by the manufacturers and will work in your engine.

Could the below 75 HP be to do with quantity rather than quality?
