lower unit gear lube

I bought lower gear unit oil from an auto parts store with the same viscosity numbers as the lube you'd find at a marine supply store. The salesman at the store said it would be fine for my engine (1985 140hp Rude VRO)
I bought it because I was already in an auto store, didn't have any marine grade oil at home and I needed to drain and winterize the engine, and I was told it is a "no,no" to leave the lower unit empty during the winter.
Just double checking, because I've heard that the lube needs to have certain additives (for water leakage, etc.), and that I should really get the stuff they sell in the marine store.

Sounds as though you may already know the answer...

I would stick to the marine lube...

OK, since it's March, I gotta assume you used the autoparts store gear lube to winterize it last fall? In my fairly uneducated opinion, it is/was probably perfectly OK for winterizing, if you drained and filled properly. I would really think that any gear oil would coat the gears and keep them from corroding during the winter.

Come spring, again, if it were me, I'd drain it and refill with marine gear oil. Why not? It's so damn cheap and easy to do.

By the way, many/most autoparts stores sell marine gear oil. for instance, I regularly buy Valvoline marine gear oil at the local autoparts store. So, maybe you did buy "real" marine gear oil.(does it say marine on the tube?). I also regularly buy gear oil (and 2 stroke oil) at my favorit hardware stores, autoparts stores, gas stations, big box stores, etc. etc. depending on when I need them and what's the most convenient stop for me to make. I very RARELY buy that stuff at the boat store because it's just so over priced there, and the boat stores around my town cost me about 40 minutes of RT driving. I usually buy "name brand" products, but none the less, there are many more sources than boat shops.
