I have a 90hp 1988 Evinrude on a 17' Whaler. I have gear oil leaking out the propeller shaft housing. I also have a little coming out a small hole about half way up the lower unit stbd side. I have had freezing weather and I did not change the gear oil yet. My guess is that I have water in the gear oil and it froze, which pushed oil out the seals. Can anyone confirm or deny this diagnosis. And if that is the case have I done any damage to those seals? Thanks!

First thing is to make sure it's gear oil. If it's black and gooey looking, it's probably exhaust oil leeching down from the exhaust housing.

If it's clear, I would be pulling the drain plug and see what's in the gear case.

In either case, draining the gear case would be a good idea just to set the mind at ease.

In freezing weather, if water was within a lower unit in any quanity, the water would do more than simply push a seal out.... it would actually cause the lower unit housing to crack which would usually be quite visible.

Are you sure that what you are seeing is actually gearlube, or might it actually be the gasoline/oil mixture running down the inner portion of the long exhaust housing between the powerhead and lower unit, then oozing out the carrier housing (propshaft housing) and the small water drain/outlet hole that you mention.

Remove the lower drain plug screw from the lower unit and compare the lube with what you're speaking of. If the coloring etc is the same, in all likelyhood you have a lower unit seal leaking.

If on the other hand, the gearlube looks normal but what you see leaking is pure black, chances are that the lower unit is fine.

Water in the lower unit will appear in two different ways.... either the lube will appear milky, or pure water will be present and will run out as soon as you remove that lower drain screw.

If any uncertainty exists, drain the lower unit completely, then replace just one screw, either the lower drain screw or the upper lube level screw, it doesn't matter. Then, apply 7 to 12 pounds of pressurized air to the open screw hole. That pressure will reveal any leakage of the lower unit seals etc by sight and/or sound.

Also switch to a synthetic gearlube which will work even with water present(though it will need to be changed frequently until the problem is fixed)
Sounds like unburnt fuel/oil mixture we see after we run De-carbonizer thru the engine prior to a plug change.
Watch your plug seals closely.

Thanks All,
I belive that it is fuel/oil mixture running out the exhaust, but I also have what I think is gear oil coming out a small hole just forward of the water intake. I know I need to drain the lower unit, and I put some efort into it yesterday but couldn't remove the drain plug, it's always something!

Remember to twist it the direction you want while hitting it.Also help it by using heat, but only if really stuck on....I bet it is yucky and black if it is that tight and it will smell burnt if really old.....Switch it every 50 hrs like plugs until it gets really clean.Gears are really pricey if at all damaged.
TimM

That little hole you speak of also drains the exhaust housing.
