lower unit gear repair set

I have a 1992 mercruiser Alpha one Gen 2 that needs a new set of gear and bearings.before i purchase a set from ebay i need to know is the Ratio is important..my is 1.98.please help me!!
sellers are telling me that the ratio dont have nothing to do with lower unit gears..is that true?

Yes the ratio varies Here is the chart
You need 20-24 teeth gears in the upper, keep in mind if you wind up with a 1.94 instead of 1.98 it wouldn't be that much of a difference

If your original was a 1.98 you do not want to go to a 1.50
The 1.98 is for a 4 cylinder and the 1.5 is for a V8

Would need more info to determine what you need to replace. Is this a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder?

I'm also thinking to replace the lower unit .I found one that is the same model but the ratio is 2.0..this will work?

If your original was a 1.98 you do not want to go to a 1.50

AD, I think OP wants to just replace the gears in the lower. I think in '92 the lower was the same gear set for all the upper ratios from 1.50 to 1.98

If you want to go from a 1.98 to a 2.0 there will be a small change in performance and it will work. Don't think there will be any prop change but if there is one needed it won't be much, which I still doubt it will happen right now.

That said, if your starting to over tach now, there might be an issue, but if not, there should be no issue

1.98 to 2.0. That's 1%. You won't see any difference.
