lower unit help

Tried to replace the impeller on an 1972 lightwin 4 hp and when I was taking off the impeller the whole drive shaft came off from the lower uni. I tried sticking it back in but its not willing to go in all the way. please help

How are you sure its only going in part of the way? i pulled mine yesterday (shaft out and all) and it slid right back in, mines electric clutch though so it is in neutral. did you try turning the prop a lil bit to mesh up the gears?
