My lower unit hydraulic unit is not bolted to anything. It looks like there was a casing that has rotted out. It's not easy to move it, but I am planning to drop tomorrow for the season. Is this a big deal? Could I rig up a small encasing to keep it in place and be ok? It is in the rear starboard side in the very back. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. It says something like SAE J1171 on the unit itself. 99 Sea Ray 210 with a 5.0 Merc.

You should replace the bracket that secures the hydraulic unit to the inside.

If that thing is flapping around, you're either going to break some wires or it'll cause a short from rubbing through a wire and possibly have an electrical fire.

You could also end up with cracked or broken hydraulic hose.

It's bolted down for a reason!

I have to secure my power trim pump, also. Although, I'm not going to replace the (crappy) steel bracket, as they're expensive ($100), and i still have 2 fastener holes intact. I'll just try to re-install the screws....and see how secure it will be.
Just another example of why they should avoid regular steel on boats.

I decided to get a stainless steel bracket. The one I had was completely rusted out. Thanks for the responses. Looks like my ground was about to break off had I taken it out and shaken it around at all.
