With the help others on this site I was able to rebuild the water pump in my 1984 Merc 115 inline 6. Much easier than I thought! I'd thought I share a fix I found for the reinstallation of the lower unit. When I tried to slide the lower unit back into place it seemed to get hung up on something with about an inch to go. I lined everything up but it still seemed to hung up on something. Long story short... I found that the guide tube you attach to the water pump to help line up the pump housing was pushing on a rubber grommet inside the water pump housing causing it to flex inward and kept the tube from sliding into the housing easily. I backed the guide tube out and pushed the the grommet back into place and it slid rright on with only a little bit of jiggling. Hope this helps!
