lower unit kicking my ***

ok my lower unit will not go back in place, ive used every idea that you all have been giving me,ive got the motor in reverse,i am rotating the driveshaft from the prop to line the splines,the gear selector rod is started in its hole.I am 3/4" away from LU closing up.could the water pump seal located on the copper tube not be lining up with the pump housing bore? i have been f###ing around with this for 2 days.it came apart so easy that i cant understand why its KMA1974 mercury 850

i know when i did line i had to line that water pump line, copper tube thing up with a screwdriver while i was sliding the lower unit on, the copper peice kept falling forward and not going through it intended hole!

there isnt enough room to try the screwdriver much less see where to put a screwdriver

Could be the exhaust tube not seating into the seal in the L/U. Try applying some vaseline to the bottom of the exhaust tube and the inside of the exhaust tube seal. It takes a bit of a "push" to get the thing seated once you have all the shafts aligned and engaged.
