My 75 horse Mariner is leaking a gold colored fluid out of the bottom water intake hole. Would a lower unit leak come from there or could it be something else. If it is a bad seal how difficult is it to replace?

Re: Lower unit leak or something else?

Pennzoil lower unit oil that I have purchased was gold colored. Quicksilver is blue-black. Oil with water in it is in varying colors from the pure oil colors mentioned to chocolate brown on to somewhat thick yellow in extreme instances.

I'd assume your 75 hp engine is 2 stroke meaning that some oil residue from combustion goes out with the exhaust and cooling water and can come out that hole.

One sure way to know is to drop your lower unit lower oil fill plug. If the oil in there is QK and is black-blue, then it is normal drainage. If it is golden and clear, like Pennzoil, drain the unit and refill with QK oil. Then take the rig out for a few outings and if the drippings are still gold forget it. If blue black, then you have a leak and from there it is the upper shaft seal located under the water pump housing or shift seal located adjacent to it.
