Thanks for the info. What is the best way to align the coned cam. Or can I assemble the carrier/prop area then adjust it from the shift shaft on top? Thanks for all the help.

Correct. the shims must be put back in the same way as they were removed. a dial indicator is a plus/must.

Never removed the shims so I am good there. I was just wondering on how the coned cam would get aligned.

The concern with the shims is, did the guy who took it apart earlier (and put the cam follower in backwards) replace the shims and in the right place.

You don't really align the shift cam if that's what you are referring to. As I mentioned, it is free to rotate 360*. It is important that it is installed "right side up". Once you get the whole unit put back together, then you will set it into whatever gear you want for reattachment to the motor. This is done by rotating (CCW only as viewed from above) the shift shaft. As you rotate the shift shaft (CCW only) the unit repeatedly switches between F-N-R-F-N-R etc.

Finally can work on the boat after some snow in the dallas/Ft Worth area. Going to change out water pump and install the lower unit. What gear should i install the lower unit in? I'm thinking (N) will be the easiest. Thanks for any info.

It is easy to slip out of N when installing the LU. The best is to have it in F or R. Make sure that the controls are also set to the same as the LU.

Got the water pump changed and installed the LU and filled it with gear oil. I put it in reverse while installing the LU. I'll get it to the lake in a day or two to do a break-in on the new prop hub..Thanks again for all the help.

Made it to the lake today. It ran real good. Lower unit is finally all good Had a starter issue though. The starter drive assy (part that engages flywheel with teeth) spins but didn't get high enough to engage flywheel. I started turing it and it start to rise. After that the starter engaged with no issues. How do I get it to stay in the higher position all the time? Thanks
