I have a '62 evinrude that was given to me from my grandfather. I took it to an outboard repair shop to see what kind of shape it was in. He said the lower unit needed to be resealed. Can anyone help me out? I have no idea how I can go about fixing this. The guy wanted way more than I can afford to pay to fix such an old motor.

OldEvin...can you post the model number? Hard to give a good answer without knowing the engine. ;)

The motor is still at the shop, I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. I will post it ASAP.

10024 is a 62' 10 hp. You can get the lower unit seal kit here.

Parts

If you are not familiar with the procedure for servicing lower unit a manual would be valuable.you can get a general one at the bottom of this page or a factory one at the parts link above.

Re: Lower unit leakage, need help!!!!

The 5.5 and 10's of the late 50's and 60's really run great when restored to running condition. But you may want to check that the compression is good and lower unit gears are still servicable before doing any other repairs. As ob suggested, get a service manual and take a look. May turn out to be a good garage project. Good Luck! :D
