Lower unit lube change?

For my DF 115 the Owner's Manual indicates that after draining the gear lube one is to refill using the lower plug hole and fill until lube reaches the upper hole.:confused: Can one not just replace the lower plug and fill from the top??? Seems to logical but they specifically state, and show, refilling via the lower hole. What gives?

Thanks,
Andy

Re: Lower unit lube change?

You absolutely must fill from the bottom hole because if you were to fill from the top, air would get trapped in your gearcase and you would think it was full and it wouldn't be. Then you would have too little lube and destroy your lower unit. Just go to Walmart and buy a lower unit lube kit that includes a pump and the lube - you can always use the pump in the future, just hold on to the original bottle the lube comes in because the pump is usually made for that bottle.

I'd also research synthetic fluid,I've had good luck with it!
