I bought a bass boat couple of years ago with a 1988 Evinrude 48sp. The person who sold it to me took good care of it with seasonal maintenance from a local marina. I usually do my own maintenance, but I was talking with someone today who had one of these motors, and he said that I need to replace something with the thruster in lower unit each year, because the rubber wears out abnormally. ???? Is this something I should be doing? And is there other maintenance in the lower unit I should be doing besides changing the oil? THANKS....

Sounds like they were talking about changing the impeller in the water pump.

It is a good idea to change at least every couple of seasons.
