Lower Unit noise.

I just got this '96 175 Ocean Pro. It goes into gear no problem, slides right in with no grinding sounds, but when I'm idling forward, you can here a slight "chink, chink, chink,...." Maybe more of a "chick, chick, chick,..." I was told that the lower unit has never been rebuilt, so I'm assuming it's time. I just dread that $500 bill. I have never done it before, are those lower units pretty tough to rebuild.

Only 10 years between overhauls? Please, say it aint so...does the frequency or intensity vary with RPMs? Assume you've eliminated any other source of noise, such as prop nut not tight enough or too tight, piece of loose insulation under the cowl, brother-in-law dropped a socket down into the cowling, water pump impeller about to disintegrate, trim tab came loose and contacting the prop, sonar transducer came loose and hitting the transom...I could go on...

That could also be that the shift rod length is not set correctly, such that the gears are not completely meshed.

check for proper torque on prop nut, most are 55lb some require up to 100lb
