lower unit noise

I have a 150hp etxj 1986 I was running it in a 100 gal. tank adjusting idle speed. got that set so i went to put in gear went in a little hard not to bad but i have noise sounds like a rattle at low speed sounds like its coming from the lower unit or just above it take prop off and noise goes away i just had lower unit off to do water pump could i have done some thing wrong to cause this. Thanks for any help in advance

I doubt it. Check your gearlube. Make sure it's full and clean. Metal content would be a bad sign, but a little fine metallic in the gearlube is normal.

It could just be that the propnut wasn't tight and the prop was rattling around. It could also be clutch rattle from the cogs inside the gearcase doing a little bumping around at idle. It goes away with load and RPMs. Clutch rattle is mostly harmless.

THANKS Willy B forgot to say just changed gear lube. very little metal on magnetic plug. Dont know what us back yarders would do with out you guys! lol THANKS AGAIN.
