Lower unit numbers and info

I took the lower unit apart on my 650 Merc to see if it is worth trying to seal. I found that it is more of a mess than I had hoped (pitted gears, a small crack in the bearing carrier,a small crack in the case, etc). Anyway, I looked on ebay and found another LU off a 650 (a little newer) and the seller says the number off the inside of the case up by the trim tab is 1623-3486. The number on mine is 1623-2460. Anyone out there know what these numbers mean? As far as my LU goes, I think I will need to find another one to get all the parts I need. It is kinda a shame cause the gears look good (besides the pitting) and all but one of the bearings seem in pretty good shape. My guess is that it wasn't used very much but just neglected. I would just kinda like to know what will work and what will not in case I come across a good deal on another LU. I do not want to spend a lot on this old thing. As far as my gears go, will a little pitting hurt anything?

The 1623-2460 was changed to 1623-3912 which was changed to 1623-3486 the fit serial number 1765044 to 2803561 and beyond, so if they are both the same length drive shafts they will exchange

That will be very valuable info when I go to look for another one. Thanks! Lookiing at the serial number chart on Oldmercs.com, it looks like those numbers go to about '70-'71 model year. Would it be possible to use the driveshaft out of mine if I found one that is a long shaft?

Re: Lower unit numbers and info

It's been a long time but something in the back of my mind tells me that they used a different housing in the long and short shaft engines. I know that the early units were helical cut gears and the later were spiral cut, complete units will interchange but not parts, for that matter the older 4 and 6 cyl units will interchange but some have different gear ratios

Might be a stupid question, but would it hurt to have one with a different gear ratio (probably have to change props too then). Are the ratios dramatically different from one to another that actually fit the same basic motor?
