I opened the lower unit of that motor to replace oil seals because there was plenty of water in the oil when I drained it. I had hard times because it was never done before.
The bearings and gears are black instead of light steel grey, just like they come from the store. The color is slightly changed on the surface of the gears by the thrust bearing. Is that possible?
The water pump was in poor condition and I wonder if this had not reflected on the power head, but it seems find to me - slight click in the crankshaft bearings and some play of the pistons when I push them with a screwdriver through the spark plug seat up and down, this will be thorouhly inspected after test run in spring, starting with compression test.

Water and oil = lack of lubrication. If the thrust bearing and washer are blueish black, replace them. I have seen gears black(stained) from years of not changing oil but wear pattern on pinion will be shiny.

I inspected gears and bearings all except one bearing in excellent condition, the one I will replace, change seals and O-rings.
The water pump was in poor condition - I'll fit a new one, and now wonder whether to inspect the thermostats?
