Hello iboaters!

Working thru checking over a 78 175 evinrude and still waiting for a service manual to arrive.

I'm working the lower unit and do not know the type of gear oil to fil it up with. Can someone help with the type. Also, when draining it, at the end, the oil seemed a little chalky, just a little grayish not black like the majority of it was. I have seen vehicle motors with broken heads and oil in the water and this did not seem the same or as bad. The nylon washers looked well used and will be replaced. Any thoughts on whether this was water(probably)intrusion and potential damage or issues to look for. Does my description sound normal for some water seeping in? I have no idea when the last service was done the motor.

I will replace water pump after the manual arrives.

How tight should the prop nut be? It will move with just my fingers. If the cotter pin is removed I could probably tighten the nut one more knuckle an insert the cotter pin.

Re: Lower Unit Oil Change

Use a High Performance marine gearlube. Synthetic would be my choice. Merc offers a good one, but Johnnyrude's stuff is good too. Pennzoil makes some that's widely available.

It doesn't sound like you have a bad water intrusion problem. That could just be contaminants that floated to the top. Water would sink to the bottom.

The prop nut should be good and snug. If you have a plastic splined washer, not as snug as as if it were metal instead. It shouldn't be loose.

Those are Castle Nuts. Do you suppose the slots would be called Turrets? ;)

Willy,

Thanks for the info. Is gear lube usually 90 weight? I agree with the Synthetic call. When you say snug on the prop nut, I assume that is wrench tight? Any specific torque?

Maybe the slots are call troughs!

Since I'm new to the outboard world I have to ask a stupid question. Why is the gearcase oil filled from the bottom hole (drain/fill) and not the top? Is it related to trapped air.

Yes, related to trapped air - the air rises to the top, out the vent hole, followed by lube when it's full.
