Lower unit oil leak through weep hole after impeller replacement

Hi All,
I recently replaced the water pump on my Alpha one, Gen 2 drive (2002 year). I also replaced the quad ring seal. After I got the lower unit back together, I went to refill the lower unit and it started puking out of the weep hole. After I dropped the lower unit again, I noticed the quad ring looked fine and was still in the recessed hole. Did I do something incorrectly? Is it possible for it to get dislodged, and then "relodged" upon inspection? I order a new seal just to be safe, but it was a Quicksilver seal. Anyone ever experience this?

Might be other than the quad ring hole.

Is shift shaft seal good, pump housing leaking?

what did the driveshaft seal under the water pump look like? the seal carrier (yellow plastic) can deform especially if they run hot or was run dry.

Given the age might be worth pressure testing while you have it apart

tried it again, this time with aviation gasket sealer on the quad ring. Happened again. One thing to note, I still had the reservoir cap on, but vent hole plug was out to vent. Does it matter if that cap was on though it was venting? I noticed after dropping again the shift seal was dry but the water pump housing was wet with oil all to the splines. Here’s a pic:

SO your saying the splines are wet with lube at top of shaft, down to on top the pump housing?

Splines are dry, but shaft was wet to about right at base of splines and on top of pump housing all wet with oil.

Also from what I can tell, it was dry around the quad ring, so I think that seal was working correctly.

remove the keyway and base plate and pressure test the lower again

Quad O ring should be glued into place after carefully thoroughly cleaning where it is seated.This however does not sound like your issue however doing this procedure correctly will remove any doubt re; leaking from this area. In your case my guess is drive shaft seal in the upper.Charlie

Would guess its either the seal below the water pump or the driveshaft seal in upper based on leaking down the shaft below the splines. Although not sure how it would end up inside the pump unless it was the yellow carrier seal. really need to pressure test. Can do the whole drive together, can do the lower alone by plugging the oil passage (clamp metal over it) to do the upper alone you need a spare drive shaft

Well I think I discovered my issue. I found an additional seal on the drive shaft below the carrier seal. I’m assuming that’s not correct? This would have prevented the carrier seal from going all the way down?
