So filings I'm told are somewhat normal. What if I find more than filings? Do I pull the lower unit and disassemble the lower unit to inspect gears?

I hear ya on the iboats police.

I definately want to do it right. Definately going to change my lower unit oil at least once a season if not more now that I know how easy it is and it's cheap. Well......cheaper than repair anyway.

Thats the whole point of "preventative maintenance"... always cheaper :D

Just in case I find something when I pull the bearing assembly and I find more filings or something larger, take it apart and inspect correct?

Back in the day when I started in this business all we had was OMC " C " lube and we were told it was made out of "whale oil". It could take a lot of water injestion and still keep on lubricating the g/c. O'well, learn something new every day.
