Lower unit oil or 2-cycle

My 75 horse Mariner is leaking fluid out of the bottom water intake hole. I have had it repaired twice and I believe that it was fixed correctly by a reputable repair shop. The motor sat for several weeks without any signs of leaks after the repair. When I got to the lake last Saturday I realized that I had a brain fart and didn't put the top back on the oil reservoir and there was oil all over the transom and inside of the motor. What I am wondering is there a possibility that oil could have somehow leaked down into the lower unit and leaked out from the water intake hole. The fluid in question is blue like the 2 cycle oil I use but I also know that the lower unit oil that the shop uses is blue. Anybody out there have any ideas on this?

Re: Lower unit oil or 2-cycle

I'm going to say that at that point you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Considering what you did, I wouldn't worry about it for now. After a couple of outings check your lower unit and if the oil is clear blue/black, not milky, you probably don't have a lower unit issue. Keep in mind that if you check the oil immediately after running it could appear milky, but that is just agitated (aerated) oil. You need to let it sit for several days without running before you check it.
