Re: lower unit oil

When you put new oil in the lower unit, you open the upper cap put the new oil in until it seeps out the top . Then you fasten the top screw, and quickly re-fasten the lower cap. the oil coming out of the top should be new oil. What was the color of the old oil?If milkey, brown, you might have a water leak problem.

Re: lower unit oil

I'd recommend filling it up properly and try her again. Be sure to change the vent and filler gaskets!!! every time....

Careful. Be sure you've topped her up to the vent(top) screw. If you run her low, it can starve the top gear box bearing. More air in the system promotes larger volumes of water to be drawn in from temp. changes. Fill from bottom until oil exits out the top. On some gear boxes, it'll spit oil and air out the top and fool you into believing its full. You then keep topping it off through the vent hole with an oil squirt-can filled with LU oil.
:)

Re: lower unit oil

To Schematic and all, good advice on changing filler & vent gaskets on lower units each time. I live quite a ways from a Marine Supply, so I went to our local hardware store with one of the caps. I searched through the "O" ring cabinet and found the size I needed. I bought a dozen and put 'em in the tool box. Now I can change whenever. Hal
