Lower Unit Oil

Hello,

I finished replacing the water pump on my lower unit and don't know what kind of oil or how much I need. I tried the search but there didn't seem to be any advice on oil. I have no idea what I'm suppose to buy. Thanks for the help.

Assuming we are discussing your 88 hp, use 80-90 weight outboard gear oil. Hi-Vis would be better. I dunno, it probably holds around a pint and a half (??).

Lower unit oil, available at most auto parts store, don't use gear oil, they are both 80/90 but the lower oil has addatives for water intrusion.

Start putting it in the bottom hole and when it comes out the top hole it is full, some will leak out before you can get the plug back in but that is normal and won't hurt anything.

Most lower unit oils will be able to mix (not separate) with 10% water, and still hold its viscusity. <Theres another word I cant spell.

dahoopd, You might tell us the year and HP of the motor in question. Some used special gear lube for electric shift motors. Some used the common stuff for mechanical shift motors. What do you have?

Ahhhh - - - you don't need to add oil when replacing the water pump.

My apologies, PC was down. The motor is an 1989 88 SPL. I want to winterize it also. Thanks for the help.

OK, that should be a mechanical shift V4 motor. Any marine gear oil for mechanical shift motors is fine. Buy a quart and a pump to make the job easier. It will take most of the quart to refill it.
