I just accquired a 1983 Johnson 7.5 model J8RCTA. It has been sitting up for about 2 years. We barrel tested it and it cranked, idled and ran fine.

The motor has been propped up overnight and this evening I noticed some oil leaking from the seam where the lower unit connects.

Do I need to replace the seal, or is it possible that the seal will reseat? I did not see any oil in the water after testing it.

Thanks!

Re: lower unit oil

That is probably just combustion residue, Fishbates.

If it were leaking from the propshaft, then you might be concerned.

Good luck. :)

Re: lower unit oil

Hey thanks JB!

On my Evinrude the combustion residue is very dark in color and looks...well...more combusted, whereas this oil was much lighter in color and did not look burned at all. In addition, the consistentcy of this oil leaking was not the same as what I see after running my 20 for a while. It wouldn't be normal for lower unit lube to be leaking that far up though would it?

Any thoughts?
