Lower Unit Problem (or not - ?)

I seem to be the hero in a never ending saga of lower unit problems. I'm restoring a Checkmate and bought a '90 Johnson 200 on ebay for it. Turns out the lower unit was trash, it had cracks around the driveshaft bearing holder along with a couple of bolts broken off. Then there was the lower unit I bought on ebay from a supposed '89 Evinrude that turned out to be from '78 and isn't compatible.

Which brings me to my current lower unit. This one was pretty much given to me for just the cost of shipping with the understanding that the previous owner didn't know if it was good or not.

With it sitting on my workbench I can shift it into forward and rotate the driveshaft, everything feels smooth. When I FIRMLY push the shift rod down into reverse it's ok too. But I found that if I so much as bump the shift rod after it's already down or else don't firmly jam it down it will come out of reverse. I'm thinking this isn't good, but once installed the shift cable will be holding pressure on it when in reverse - right? I won't have to use reverse very often, but when I need to it has to work.

Also, I could potentially use the clutch dog from my trashed lower unit. However, without the special tools called for in the shop manual how difficult is that going to be?
