First off i have a 1989 35hp force and I WAS going to go fishing today and when i got ready to launch and i took my motor down off of the trasom saver i noticed there was lower unit oil coming out of my water inlet so i went home and took the lower unit off and at the top of the shaft there is a seal that was bad no big deal easy to replace, when i got down to where the impeller is there is a seal at the bottom of the shaft and i was wandering how to get that seal out or if it would be easier to take it to the shop and have them do it, and another question that i have should i just go ahead and replace all the seals in the lower unit and if i have a shop do does anyone have a estimate on what it would cost any help and info is greatly appreciated.

Re: lower unit problem

If your going to have the gear case apart do all the seals I'm not sure but I would think the labor would be close wheather you do one or all.
If you are losing gearcase oil usually there would be water in the lube making it milky. Are you sure it was gear lube and it actually was coming out of the intake? It is normal for exhaust residue to come out of exhaust and
drain holes in the leg.Residue has a gassy smell and not gear lube smell.

Lower unit re seal cost will probably be around 2 to 300 dollars. A Clymer manual and seal kit is around $80 bucks and a weekend. Most common leak is around the driveshaft seal and the prop shaft seal.

DEFINITELY replace them yourself! At 100 or more bucks an hour labor charge plus keeping your boat there until they get around to it, you will be much better off. Plus, everytime you run the engine you will think to yourself "I did that." --very satisfying. It only takes hand tools to do, and if that lower unit is like the old Chrysler 35 lower unit (which I suspect it is), the drive shaft floats freely between the crankshaft and pinion. Once you remove the water pump and impeller drive pin, then the shaft just lifts right out. You then use something to hook out the old seal. Note which side is up as there is a correct way and incorrect way to install the new seal. Use a hammer tapping a big socket to drive in the new one so you don't bend it.

As stated before by Euro, 80 bucks between Clymers and seals. Definitely Clymer--it seems better that others. But, if you can get it at your library, Intertech (Volume II all outboards 35 and up) is good also.
