I have a 63 merc 65hp 4cyl outboard. I was told by a union mechanic that I didnt need to winterize the motor, just to leave it down and start it to make sure all the water was out, unfortunetly he was the only one I talked to about it, anyways the gear oil was never drained. I started it and was getting it ready for summer when I noticed it wasnt shifting into gear, I looked at the prop, It was sticking out it seemed like, so I took it off and realized that thers a nut holding in an aluminum housing in there, the aluminum housing is broken and pushed past the nut (this was a real disappointment,I just put in a new floor,carepet,lights,etc...)I have a whole parts motor as well but the upper part of the lower unit is out in that, I was wondering if you need any special tools to take that apart or if you know exactly what to do with it, I dont want to mess it up any worse.
Thanks,Dennis

It was the aluminum housing in there that was broken. I called the boat shop and they said it does just slide out so I put the crappy prop off the old motor on and the nut, then grabbed the sledge hammer and started beating it out, did the same on the other motor(which everything looked brand new in there) put in the new one and it works like a dream Thank goodness for parts motors

Now head over to OldMercs.com and get yourself an owner's manual for it so you can winerize it this Fall and not go through that again! Also, the water that punched the carrier out got in there somehow - check your lower unit oil periodically this summer - you may have issues with your seals...
- Scott
