Alright on my 75 85hp mercury i just got running good except it idles really low but i don't care it gets up and goes so i havnt messed with it just happy its running. I just got a new 84 forester to stick it on and i got on the lake and it ran great the other day. Today brought it out and it went in reverse fine but stuck it in forward and it just make a bad clunking sound and wouldnt go into gear unless you slamed the throttle. Left it in gear and went around the lake and stoped to check the throttle cables and it all seemed fine. But now it wont go back into neutral its stuck in forward. So i bring it back and you spin the prop a clunking sound is coming from behind it. I take the nut off and the prop will not come off? evan had a gear puller on it and would not budge? So i assume whatever is behind the prop is the problen... the gearbox?
So im going to pull the lower unit off tomorrow but anyone know what my problem is so i know what to look for? And maybe there is something i don't know about the prop like another pin holding it in there?

Re: lower unit prop question on 1975 85 hp mercury

i think with that engine there is just the nut on the shaft that you have to remove. I had the same problem with my prop and i ended up making my own puller using a harmonic balancer puller, which looks sort of like a big birds foot with the big bolt it the center to pull with, and some chain what I did was take the chain and wrap enough around each blade then bolt it to the puller once I had one around each blade i just pulled right against the prop shaft ant cranked it down with my impact gun and it finally came loose but it took a lot of pressure.
If I were you I wouldn't take the lower unit off just to take the prop off because its not going to change any thing to how the prop is going to have to come off.

looks something like this but instead of just hooking it to the blades i wraped the chains all the way around
