Lower Unit Question

86 Johnson, 28 HP. After replacing seals and a new impeller, got the motor back on the boat, and all is fine. But, being the nervous sort, I'm wondering just what the lube capacity of the lower unit is. I've been through the repair manual (Clymer), and the motor manual and don't find it anywhere. It just sure doesn't seem like it took anywhere near as much as my 35 HP does. I'm relatively sure I'm fine--I added through the drain hole until the fluid came out the vent hole just like I've always done. But, like I said, I'm the nervous type and just want to make sure. I sure don't want to go through that lower unit again any time soon. Thanks in advance!

Re: Lower Unit Question

does not hold as much as a thru hub exhaust 35. the 28 esed a above the prop exhaust and a split gearcase. your fill procedure sounds correct.

Re: Lower Unit Question

Thanks rodbolt. I'm guessing it took less than 10 ounces, but no matter what, it wouldn't take any more. But, like I said, I'm the nervous type and I really don't want to be replacing anything else in that lower unit. Just want to go out and enjoy the lake for a change.

Re: Lower Unit Question

Thanks Dhadley. I was pretty sure it was right, but I kept second guessing myself. Still can't find that capacity anywhere in my manuals, so I really appreciate your reply!
