lower unit question

Hi all I have a 35 hp johnson 1959 model. I just put on a new set of coils , new head gasket , thermostat , and rebuilt the carb. I put it in the water and it runs great, except for the clutch slipping in forward. I have looked at the clutch dog and forward gear and they look fine to me. Has anyone had this problem before?

Thanks to anyone who helps.
Ash

Tashas Daddy were are you now? :D I had a motor around the same year and hp but I haven't heard of it having that problem when I had heard the history of the motor. I just sold it not running. There will be some other people chiming in soon.

Re: lower unit question

Does it sound like it is over revving when throttled?

Re: lower unit question

Any chance of getting better photos?

The clutch dog does look like it has a worn surface(bright spot). It is hard to see anything of the wear areas on the gear.

I'm taking them with my phone.

Re: lower unit question

I just cannot see the parts well enough in the pictures. But the bottom line is that if there is ANY wear or rounding off of the dog ears or the place where they meet the gear it will jump out. It doesn't take much and the average novice will say it looks OK, but it isn't OK. There is a lot of torque applied to that area. 35 horses in fact. Multiplied by the gear ratio. 35 horses can dang near pull the barn down.

I can't see the lobes well enough either, but judging by the way the light hits the edge of the lobe in the first photo I'd say it is worn. Like FR said, it doesn't take much.

Been there done that. Replace the clutch dog. The rounded off edge is whats causing it to jump over, hence the clunking noise. Had a 59 rude 50 hp that started to clunk and the shop wanted an arm and a wallet to fix it claiming I needed all new gears. Replaced ony the part with the wear marks and cured the problem. Cheap easy fix
