Lower unit question

1st off I have a 1974 Sea Ray SRV190, mercruiser 888, Ford 302 188hp. I've posted questions on here about the lower unit issues I have and have gotten great responses. I ended up getting a used Lower unit that seems and was told to be in very good condition. It is a lower from the era with the pre loaded pin on top of the driveshaft. What I noticed right off is that the tube coming out of the water pump is made of copper, not plastic like the one that came in my rebuild kit. My question is, was that a standard thing on the old lowers, or did someone do this on there own thinking it would hold up better than the plastic ones? Which also leads me to ask if I should use the copper tube or replace it with the plastic tube? Thanks

Re: Lower unit question

Hi there,

The copper tube is standard and it is the actual water pipe going from the water pump up to the water pocket cover in the upper housing. Normally when the 2 housings are split the copper tube stays in the upper housing, and most people don't give it a second look. The plastic tube you get in the kit is a 'tube guide', it goes in the top of the water pump to guide the copper tube into the grommet as you marry up the two housings.....

Re: Lower unit question

So chances are, the copper tube is still in my upper unit, since it didn't come out with the lower. So I should just remove the tube from the new (to me) lower?

Re: Lower unit question

Before you remove the copper tube from the replacement unit, look up into the upper half to see if the copper tube is there. It probably is, but you want to check. Hy
