1973 85HP 4 stroke (85ESL73M). Put on a new L/U and had forward and reverse until it hit the water, then only forward. The shift rod connector was adjusted instead of the gear cable adjuster. Now it's out of whack.
Can we find the correct depth on the shift rod by spinning the connector w/ needle-nose pliers one turn at a time (flat side facing forward) or should we drop the L/U? Which lube should be used? Would it be easier to get it adjusted right if it were installed while in gear? Up is reverse and down is forward? A local marina sold me this Johnson gear oil that was green, but I've always heard that it should use HiVis.
I think that's all of the questions ,Thanks
