I have an 86 LU from a 70hp VRO which is busted up (internals are fine). I got ahold of an LU from an earlier model which is unknown, but is identical with same shaft etc..
I am unsure of the internals on the older LU, so I was considering going through it and possibly swapping over internals if need be. I have never dug into an LU, so I was looking for some input on special tools I will need.
I have a shop with most major tools for engine rebuilds, but like stated above, Ive never touched a LU. Is there an area on the LU that is stamped for year identification and HP identification. The older LU is green, so I was figuring it was late 70's early 80's.
Im hoping it will work, so any info is appreciated, Thanks, Mike

Re: lower unit rebuild info

Hopefully someone will jump in on your compatibility question. As to tools and procedures best bet is to go to your local library and look for a 86 or so 70 hp shop manual and review the lower unit rebuild procedures. That will give you an idea of what you are in for if you can cannibalize one to fix the other. Lower units can get sticky due to clearances, gear ratios, etc. If you have both but cannot pin down the year/model you can always tear both down and carefully compare each part.

Some earlier 3 cyl (mechanical shift) lowers shifted backwards from the newer ones. Just check to compare.
