In regards to shimming the driveshaft/pinion gear. I am rebuilding a 175HP johnson LU. I have located and purchased a new 1 piece driveshaft, and also purchased a used gearset in perfect condition(pinion/forward/reverse). The used gear set came with everything out of its original gearcase except the driveshaft and shifter rod.
I still dont know the year of the LU Im rebuilding, but the driveshaft and gears matched up with V6's from 1980(same part numbers), so I assume that 1980 is a safe guess.
If I have a shop shim the driveshaft, what all do I need to take to them. Also, what is a reasonable price to pay for this type of work. The local shop is known for badly gouging folks, so if they want too much, I would consider purchasing the OMC tool. Im positive that this wont be my last LU rebuild, so it may be worth the money to buy the tool.
After the driveshaft is installed, is there a certain amount of end play I can check. The previous driveshaft had no end play at all, and Im wondering if thats what caused the pinion gear to fail. The manual doesnt mention end play specs, so I figured Id ask.

Are there any good websites to purchase the OMC tools from. I did a search on here, but the websites that were posted no longer exist.

To shim the driveshaft you will need all components that are on it. The gear, bearings and bearing carrier/cover. The LU housing is not required. If you have a shop manual (which you should) it shows how to shim the driveshaft.

I would think that even if the shop way over charges, it would still be cheaper to have them do it. The shim gauge alone is 50-60 bucks and the shim tool has to be at least a couple hundred.
