I took off my pre alpha outdrive to install a new waterpump impeller and am now having issues realigning it. I have turned the shift shaft clockwise while turning the propshaft counterclockwise, but it will not line up. I think it is not going into the splines in the upper half. Is there a trick or is this all trial and error. thanks in advance, Brian

Put the shift in F gear

Align the shift shoe so the lower is in F gear and it should go back in. The shift shoe is usually a little tricky the 1st time you try to put the lower back on.

You may need to not turn the shaft by turning the par as much as you are as it may not be off by as much as you think it is.

Is the alignment ok? Did you check it with an aliignment bar? If it's not aligned properly, you won't get it to start.

yes dont turn as much as you are. I do recall in the past having to re align my splines and it was maby like an 1/8 turn Vs a 1/2 or 1/4 turn.

Aside from the splines as the seem to line up almost on their own the shift shoe is what seems to not be in the right place every time and thats what causes the last 1/2 " fro going back in.

Give that a shot, Ill bet you get it this time. The 1st time i ever pulled an lower it took like an hour to put it back. Once I figured it out it now takes a few minutes.

As don suggests ONLY if you pulled the entire drive off. Your post does read as though you pulled the drive all the way off BUT you only needed to pull thge lower to replace the water pump. I assume you pulled the lower only.

Again if your drive pulled out easy enough that would almost make one think your alignment is ok. If it was way off the drive would have been binding on the way off. They you would fugure it would be murder to put back on.

Re: lower unit reinstall

put the water tube in the waterpocket cover. the water tube guide in the water pump... that may help... other than that. it's just a plain pain to line them up. i've done several R&R's of the lower to upper while on the boat. the more i've done. the better i get. but rest assured. it's a pain. personally, for me, i feel it's the watertube that hoses me. it flops around and gets hung up prior to going in... food for thought. last time i seperated the upper and lower. i did so on the bench. puttin it back together again i was able to do by myself. second try i think..... much easier on the bench.....

don't forget the quad ring inbetween the halfs or the flat washer on the shift shaft......;)

so after dons' comment. makes me wonder. are ya mating the upper to the lower? or reinstalling the drive (upper and lower) back on the boat? guess i thought ya were mating the upper and lower, with the upper still on the boat....

Ziggy thats what I thought too

I didnt think he was re installing the complete drive as you only needed to pull the lower to do a water pump pulling the drive doesnt do anything for you in water pump relacement.

If you have turned the shaft ccw & the prop cw & it is locked in gear & the helm is in fwd......
Sometimes you need to jiggle the intermediate shift shaft where it fits into the 'shoe' while maintaining upward pressure.....
You'll know when you have it, it will go right together......;)
DO NOT force it together.....:)
