Lower Unit removal Chrysler 55hp 1967

So I think I figured out the coil is bad, and am in process of getting a new one. So I decided to put in a new impeller. I can't get the lower unit off! After removing the 4 bolts that hold it on it drops about an inch and that's it. I can see the gear shift adjusting nut but can't figure out what I need to do. I tried putting it in gear but it still is stuck on. Is it just froze or am I missing a nut somewhere?

my 1995 70hp force had 5 bolts holding lower unit on last one was under trimtab had to take it off to get to it don't know if yours is same but might be hope this helps some.

You absolutely need to remove the adjusting nut . Break the jamnut on top and loosen. Take a picture of it before you do it. Will make realigning it much easier. You also need to take of the 2 motor leg covers to get to the shaft. Fairly easy job to do.

Also, I'm 99.9% sure that you don't have a 5th nut to look for.

The linkage nut that scotiany is refering to is about 2 inches long. one side has reverse threads and can be confusing. There is a smaller nut attached that is used as a lock nut. Read this thread for better instructions on removing the lower unit. The part of the thread pertaining to you is at the bottom<br /><br /> lower unit removal

Thanks for the replys guys, I'll try the instructions you gave eurolarva. And take off the housing on the leg.
