Ok so I removed my lower unit on my Evinrude 1982 70 horse and changed the water components...now I am having a devil of a time getting the shift rod to line up. When I put the lower unit back on the shift lever is off by a 1/4 of an inch. I guess it moved around in the process of removing and replacing the lower unit...
Is there a trick to putting it back on and lining it up.

I am posting pics of the impeller just for the heck of it...I did notice though that it is off center....so is the new one...go figure
Also the bottum plate was scored really bad...I guess from sand?

Re: Lower Unit removal/shift rod

I use a straightened clothes hanger with a small hook bend on the end. Use this to manipulate the rod into place.

... and of course you replaced the wear plate, right? If you didn't, I doubt it will pump very well.

Re: Lower Unit removal/shift rod

you mean the impeller in relation to the housing? that is on purpose. From the OEM manual: "Because the housing is offset, the impeller blades flex as they rotate, varying the space between them...so at low speeds the impeller works as a displacement pump. At higher speeds water resistance keeps the blades from contact with the housing , and the pump acts as a centrifugal pump."

I use a large pair of needle nose pliers to move the shift rod. If you didn't mess with shift rod adjustment it should be alright.
