Some please tell me how the lower unit is removed off my Motor please. I removed the bolts, isn't there a rod to disconnect!? How do I get at it, I need to replace the impeller.

Re: Lower UNIT Removal

Everyone I've ever dealt with just pulls free after all bolts are removed. Note there may be some hidden bolts you cannot see, Mercs have a 7/16" 12 point bolt connecting the lower to the upper and bolts into the (trim tab) anode. What engine do you have?

grandx

I have a 1970 Mercury 50HP 500
Are you sure it's just the bolts!? I thought maybe some rods had to be disconnected!?! There are rods that go down into the gear box arent there!? (That's a silly question), do they just come loose then!?

I believe the shift linkage on that model is just a spline. It should just slide out. Just when you think you have all the bolts out, there'll be more!! Look from underneath, you may see a couple nuts you missed. . . make your life easy, get a manual...there's nuthin better to read on the jon.. sometimes the gearcase needs a little rap, but I wouldn't recommend that until you're SURE you got ALL the bolts out!!!
