Re: lower unit seals

Make sure you have the right seal kit for your motor - double-check the parts numbers. I've never changed the seals in a 1980 15HP, but my first iBoats post ever was when I was replacing seals in a 1967 20HP. A shop manual for your motor would help you a great deal, if you haven't got one get one. Here's my experience with the 20HP, might help you some:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=027083#000000
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=028684#000001
I've since learned that the two bronze-colored seals should go one facing down, one facing up, stacked like poker chips. The lips in the seals face up, so the bottom seal keeps oil in and the top seal keeps water out. I doubt your gearcase differs much from mine despite the HP and age difference, but if they do you'll figure it out. Post for help as you need it. Work slow, cleaning everything as you go, and you'll be fine.

Yes, sometimes the seals have been upgraded or changed. Look for a single seal with double lips to replace the 2 seals on the prop shaft.

Part #2 on the pic?
http://ishopmarine.com/ishop/jsp/As...~A0000022~M0016527~M0016538~M0016541~C0247449

Strange. I can see your dillema. From iBoats I get this, Sierra part # 18-2656:
http://www.boatmotors.com/mall/part...gd_poid.110548/gd_row.9/**********.256210194/

But put same part # 18-2656 in at iShop Marine
http://ishopmarine.com/ishop/jsp/AsplIsmSearchResults.jsp?reqFor=26

And you get something different. Anyone know how to work these parts finders better than me?

Re: lower unit seals

Does what Walker said make sense - i.e. your new kit has a single seal that's as big as the two original smaller seals placed together? That bigger single seal should have two rubber lips inside. If this is so, then use it.

I meant on the part they sent you, the one you don't want to install, might be able to cross reference it
