Lower unit slipping?

I have a 1973 135hp evinrude.

Uh oh! I have a new problem with my lower unit after taking out the boat yesterday! Was going along the lake at about 25mph and all of a sudden I lost drive power and the motor revved way up. I found that I could just barely creep along at low throttle but as soon as I increased throttle it would "disenguage" or slip? I didn't hear any special noises, at the time or later.

I tried adjusting the enguagement cable and even enguaging the gear manually but nothing seemed to change anything.

Any ideas? I'm about ready to take it to the middle of the lake and pull the plug! Only I'm too lazy to swim to shore ;)

Hope someone has had similar problem and can give me some idea of what to do! Thanks

Ted

PS I read this thread, but wasn't sure if it applied to my situation: http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=032050#000000

Re: Lower unit slipping?

My bet is you spun the prop hub. Nothing wrong with your lower unit.

Thanks Walker. Hope you're right! I don't know what I need to do now though, any advice? Thanks

I agree with that spun hub theory had this happen to me

Re: Lower unit slipping?

I read a bunch of posts here about spun hubs. It sounds like I'll have to get it done professionally, or put on a new prop :(

Guess I'll go see if it will run on my old aluminum prop.

Re: Lower unit slipping?

Just got down to looking at my prop, and it seems like the rubber part inside is partly melted. Definately sounds like you called it right! Haven't tried my old prop yet, but expect it will work fine now.

Thanks Walker and TC!

Re: Lower unit slipping?

Just tried out the boat with old prop on and it worked perfectly (well it ran as well as it ever does ;)

Thanks guys! I'd have never figured this out myself!
