In attempting to remove the lower unit from a 55hp 1976 evinrude I have come to the conclusion that I need serious help. I have removed the four mounting bolts, the trim tab, the bolt underneath it, and the horizontal bolt under the lower carb. that attaches the shift rod. The lower unit will pivot so I know its lose but it will not drop down at all. I've tried wedging it off and hammering on it. I have a Seloc manual and it looks like I've done all that's required. Everyone I've talked to says it should drop. Even the Evinrude mechanic!

Re: Lower unit stuck

If you have all the bolts out, and if you have disconnected the shift rod, then the drive shaft splines may be stuck in the crankshaft. If you attempt any hammering use a rubber mallet and take care not to damage the casting of the lower unit or break the cavitation plate off.

Following Jim's thought - If you can seperate it enough to squirt some oil onto the driveshaft - turn it over and squirt some Marvel Mystery oil on the driveshaft. Squirt enough so that the oil will run down the shaft and soak the splines. Let it sit for a couple of days and try again.
